Brief Description of Project
|
Archaeological surveys were performed at various sites at Eglin AFB, Florida prior to Naval training missions being moved from Puerto Rico. As part of the NEPA process, a Section 106 consultation with the State of Florida Historic Preservation Officer (SHPO) was conducted to obtain concurrence for recommended actions to preserve cultural resources that could be impacted by the new training mission. The presentation included a report of the systematic grid sampling performed by archaeologists, the results of the evaluation of artifacts obtained, and a recommendation for preservation of delineated sites. Time was critical for this project. The Navy began training in early December 2003. All possible sites had to be identified, concurrence on their preservation obtained, the public consulted, and the mitigations put in place before training started. An added complication was that many of the areas impacted possibly contained unexploded ordnance (UXO) because Eglin AFB is a test bombing range. Safety considerations were a large portion of the statement of work in this contract.
